One of them handled legal work: reviewing contracts, sorting NDAs, flagging unusual clauses. The following Tuesday, investors panicked. Thomson Reuters, which owns the legal research service Westlaw, fell nearly 18%, on track for its [**worst day on record**](https://finance.yahoo.com/news/anthropics-ai-tools-deepen-selloff-054551832.html), Reuters reported. RELX, which owns LexisNexis, and Wolters Kluwer each dropped more than 10%. A [**Goldman Sachs basket of US software stocks**](https://news.bgov.com/artificial-intelligence/anthropics-move-into-legal-is-sinking-data-services-stocks-3) lost 6%. Traders started calling it the SaaSpocalypse, after "software as a service", the subscription model most business software now runs on. Some analysts called the reaction overdone, and they may be right. But the fear behind it is worth understanding, because it affects what a small business should pay for over the next few years. ## **What investors were afraid of** Most business software charges per seat: so much per user, per month. The worry was simple. If an AI agent can do part of the work a person used to do inside that software, companies need fewer people logged in, and the vendor sells fewer seats. Analysts called it seat compression. The second worry was more basic. Plenty of software is a database with a set of screens and some rules on top. AI has made building that kind of software much cheaper and faster, and agents like Cowork can now string several tools together to do a job that used to need a dedicated product. Neither means your accounting system disappears next month. Both mean the balance between "buy a subscription" and "build something that fits" has shifted. ## **What to keep paying for** Some software is worth its price and will stay that way: - Systems of record. Accounting, payroll, your core customer database, anything where accuracy, audit trails and legal compliance matter more than convenience. - Anything regulated in your market, such as VAT and e-invoicing in the UAE or GST in India, where the vendor's job is to keep up with the rules for you. - Tools with network effects, where the value comes from everyone else being on them too, such as WhatsApp Business, Google Workspace or a marketplace. - Security, backups and identity. Building these yourself is a false economy. ## **Where to look for savings** Then there is the other pile. Go through your subscriptions and look for these patterns: 1. Tools you pay for in full but use a small part of. A project tool bought for its timeline view. A CRM used as an address book. A survey tool you open twice a year. 2. Glue work. People copying data from one tool into another every day or week, or a paid "integration" product that exists only to move rows between systems. 3. Reports someone builds by hand from three exports every Monday. 4. Seat creep. Twenty seats bought for a team where five people do the real work in the tool and fifteen only need to see a summary. For the first, a cheaper plan or a simpler tool may do. For the second and third, an AI agent connected to your existing systems, or a small custom tool built around how your team actually works, often costs less within a year and fits better. For the fourth, the people who only need summaries can often get them from an AI assistant connected to the system, without a seat of their own. ## **A word of caution about building** [**The cost of custom software has dropped**](https://vuelance.com/services/custom-software), but not to zero, and most of the cost comes after the first version: keeping software running, secure and up to date. Before replacing a subscription with something custom, ask who will look after it in year two, what happens when it breaks at 9pm, and where the data lives. There is also a difference between a tool that works in a demo and one that works on a Tuesday afternoon with real data and real mistakes in it. Agents like Cowork are still research previews. They are impressive, and they are not yet something to hand your month-end close. ## **What we would do this quarter** List every software subscription, what it costs a year, how many people use it weekly and what they use it for. Many owners have never seen that list on one page. Then pick the single worst-value item, the one with high cost and low use or with the most manual work around it, and look at replacing just that. Run the new way alongside the old one for a month before cancelling anything. **// Keep reading** ## Recommended for you [**All articles**](https://vuelance.com/blog) - ### [India's DPDP Rules and your AI features](https://vuelance.com/blog/dpdp-rules-ai-features-checklist) Consent manager registration opens in November and most obligations apply from May 2027.
