So instead of a number, here is what the number depends on. Once you know the handful of things that drive the price, you can read any quote and see where the money goes. ## **The five things that set the price** Most of the gap between a cheap quote and an expensive one comes down to five decisions. 1. Template or custom design. A customised template reuses a layout someone else designed. A custom design starts from your brand and your customers. The first is faster and cheaper; the second fits better. 2. How many different page layouts you need. Ten pages that share one layout cost far less than five pages that each look different. Count the layouts, not the pages. 3. Who writes the words. Owners forget this one most. If you supply finished text and photos, the build moves quickly. If the agency writes it, that is real work and should be on the quote. 4. What the site has to do. A brochure site with a contact form is one thing. Booking, payments, a customer login or a link to your stock system is another, and each connection adds days. 5. Languages. An Arabic version is more than a translation job. Right-to-left layouts need their own design and testing. If two quotes are far apart, check these five first. Usually one agency has assumed you will write the content and the other has not, or one has quoted a template and the other a custom design. ## **The costs after launch** The build is not the whole bill. Every year, plan for: - The domain name and hosting. Small amounts, but make sure both are in your name. - Updates and security fixes, especially on WordPress sites with plugins. - Small changes: a new service page, an updated price list, a new team photo. - Any paid tools the site relies on, such as a booking system or a form builder. Ask every agency what happens in month thirteen. A cheap build tied to an expensive, locked-in maintenance plan is not cheap. ## **Where spending more pays for itself** Some upgrades earn back what they cost. Others are decoration. Across the sites we build and fix, the money does the most work in four places. Speed comes first. A site that takes five seconds to load on a phone loses a lot of visitors before they see anything, and Google ranks it lower as well. Paying for proper image handling and a lean build is rarely wasted. Then the words on the first screen. Visitors decide in a few seconds whether they are in the right place, and a clear line saying what you do, for whom and where beats any animation. Third, the route to contact. Make it one tap to call or message you on WhatsApp from every page, and put the form where people finish reading, not only on a contact page. Last, tracking. Without it you cannot tell which pages bring enquiries, so every later decision is a guess. Setting it up properly takes an afternoon. > A fast, clear site with a handful of strong pages will outperform a large one that took six months to launch. ## **Where it usually does not** Heavy animation, video backgrounds on the home page, and dozens of thin pages written only for search engines. They look impressive in a presentation and do very little for enquiries. If the budget is tight, cut these first. ## **A sensible way to start** For most small businesses [**the right first site**](https://vuelance.com/services/website-development) is smaller than they expect: a handful of strong pages, good photos and an easy way to get in touch. Get that live, watch what visitors do, and spend the next round of budget where the numbers point. When you compare quotes, ask each agency to list what is included under the five headings above, plus what you will pay after launch. The one that answers clearly is usually the one to trust. **// Keep reading** ## Recommended for you [**All articles**](https://vuelance.com/blog) - ### [ChatGPT ads in India: worth a try?](https://vuelance.com/blog/chatgpt-ads-in-india-should-you-try-them) Sponsored results now appear in ChatGPT in India, and self-serve buying is due to open with budgets from ₹725 a day.
