Wanderer's Odyssey
// The challenge
A side-scrolling RPG lives or dies on how the jump and the attack feel. It had to feel tight on a keyboard and just as good with thumbs on a phone screen, with nothing to install.

How we built it
Lord Yamabushi Tengu's plague has turned the people of Oakhaven into the hungry dead and driven the forest's beasts mad, and Eldrin is the one magician left to lift it. Staff combos cost nothing, so mana is kept for range: a cheap Magic Bolt, or a Celestial Sphere when a fight gets crowded. Eldrin starts with 100 health, 100 mana, one health potion and one ether.
Holding jump goes higher, and down with jump drops through thin platforms. On a keyboard most actions have two or three keys, such as J, Z or a click for the staff, and on a phone the move buttons stretch outward to sprint. The game installs from the browser as a full-screen landscape app.
We tuned the game around Medium, which is fair but keeps the realm dangerous. Easy is for players who want the story with less stress, and Hard for those who found Medium relaxing. Each act can be restarted from the pause menu, and because the save lives in the browser, a private window or cleared browser data starts the hero from scratch.
