Turbo Tracks
// The challenge
An arcade racer is easy to start and hard to put down, but only if the cars feel quick and every race carries some danger. This one had to deliver that in a browser tab, on a laptop or a phone turned sideways.

// The build
How we built it
Every race is three laps against three other cars. Tracks open one at a time, from Green Valley through Dust Bowl, Lakeside Loop, Barrel Alley, Canyon Run and City Circuit, then Midnight Rally, Oil Slick Bay and Jump Park, to a Grand Final run at night. Our own tips post suggests learning each one on Easy first.
Some tracks have a police car waiting by the road, and the level card shows where before the race starts. It gives chase as you pass, and stopping anywhere near it gets you busted. The usual way to get caught is a spin-out, so the handbrake matters: tapping Space into a tight corner drifts the car round instead of braking it to a crawl.
Star rewards rise with the difficulty, to one and a half times on Medium and double on Hard. Nitro on Shift is best saved for a long straight with a cop behind. On a laptop the car drives on the arrow keys or WASD, and on a phone the game asks to be turned sideways and installs from the browser as a full-screen landscape app.
